- 8 ounces baker's german's sweet chocolate bar , finely chopped
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup dutch process cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs , at room temperature
- 1 large egg yolk , at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups shredded sweetened coconut
- ½ cup chopped pecans
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350° F. Butter three 8-inch baking pans and line them with parchment paper.
- Melt 8 ounces of finely chopped German’s chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water, stirring occasionally. Once melted, remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 ¼ cups flour, ¼ cup cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt.
- In a large bowl, cream ¾ cup butter with 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add 2 large eggs and 1 egg yolk one at a time, mixing well. Stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix in 1 cup buttermilk and the flour mixture into the butter mixture, alternating, then fold in the melted chocolate.
- Divide the batter equally among the prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before transferring to cooling racks and removing the parchment.
