Description

These Hawaiian rolls boast a sweet, buttery flavor with a soft texture, thanks to ingredients like pineapple juice and milk. Perfect for quick dinners or as a delightful side for any meal, they are simple to make yet incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup canned pineapple juice, room temperature
  • ½ cup whole milk, heated to 110ºf
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 6 tablespoons cane sugar, or granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 2½ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 4½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and cooled

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together pineapple juice, milk, melted butter, cane sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and yeast to create the flavor base.
  2. Incorporate the flour and salt into the liquid base, mixing with a spatula until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface or in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for 1½ hours.
  4. After rising, punch down the dough and divide it into 15 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  5. Cover the dough balls with a cloth and allow them to rise for another hour.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375ºF about 15 to 20 minutes before the second rise ends. Prepare the egg wash by whisking together the egg, milk, and melted butter.
  7. Brush the risen dough balls with the egg wash and bake for 20-22 minutes until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190-200˚F.
  8. Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. Optionally, brush the tops with melted butter.

Notes

For best results, ensure all liquids are at room temperature before mixing.
If you prefer a sweeter roll, add more sugar to the dough to taste.
