- 1 cup warm milk about 110°f
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast or 1 packet
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour or regular all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup raisins optional
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 5-6 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the warm milk and honey. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add the melted butter and eggs to the yeast mixture, stirring to combine.
- In another bowl, whisk the whole wheat flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until a soft dough forms. Fold in the raisins.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic, or use a stand mixer for 5–6 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1–1½ hours until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape them into smooth balls and place in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, slightly touching.
- Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Mix the flour and water to create a thick paste and use a piping bag to create a cross on each bun.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown and fully cooked.
- Warm honey with water and brush it over the buns for shine and sweetness. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, feel free to add mixed dried fruit to the dough.
These buns are best served warm, but can also be sliced and toasted for a delightful breakfast option.
