Description

This Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting is an irresistible blend of cream cheese and cocoa powder, offering a rich flavor that elevates any dessert. Quick to prepare and delightful to taste, it’s the ideal topping for cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz/225g cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 1/4 cups (455g) icing sugar
  • 1/3 cup (35g) cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 0-2 tbsp milk (if needed for consistency)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer, combine the cream cheese and butter. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes, ensuring to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  2. Gradually add half of the icing sugar and mix on low speed until incorporated. Increase to high speed and beat for 1 minute.
  3. Add the remaining icing sugar and cocoa powder. Mix on low speed until combined, then switch to high speed for an additional 30 seconds.
  4. Incorporate the vanilla extract, salt, and lemon juice. Beat on high speed for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  5. If the frosting is too thick, gradually add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is achieved.
  6. To remove air bubbles, mix the frosting by hand using a spatula for 1-2 minutes for a smoother texture. Pipe onto your cakes or cupcakes as desired.

Notes

This frosting is best used immediately after preparation. If stored, keep it in the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving.
For a thicker frosting, reduce the amount of milk added.
